This is probably the most critical component of your interactive whiteboard system. It is essentially an infrared “mouse” that allows you to click on any part of your projected image – you can click, double-click, and drag images in exactly the same way that you would do using a regular mouse. You want a pen that emits a strong, steady infrared signal. A strong signal depends on several things. First and most importantly, the user must be able to comfortably “click and hold” the switch multiple times per minute. Don’t buy a cheap pen that uses a tiny microswitch! You need to press hard on the tiny microswitch “bump” on a cheap pen in order to get the infrared pen to work and that’s not only annoying, but hurts as well. A weak signal will cause unpredictable, sketchy, or unreliable performance. Our infrared pen has a wide, easy-to-click-and-hold brass switch designed with comfort in mind. Also, don’t purchase an underpowered infrared pen that is powered by a tiny hearing aid battery or a single AAA battery. The batteries don’t last long! We made this pen because of our frustration with the cheapies! Other infrared pen companies use tiny hearing-aid-type batteries or a single AAA because it’s cheaper to make a pen that way. They don’t need to use resistors in the circuitry and the low-output batteries – usually 1.5 volts – are barely able to “power up” the bulb. They use tiny batteries or a single AAA because the voltage “matches up” with the other cheap, ready-made circuitry in their pens. Those pens are cheap, but poorly designed. Our Wib Scrib pen is designed to use two AAA batteries which send a strong signal to the infrared bulb. The infrared bulb is resistor protected, and because we use two AAA batteries, you get several weeks worth – rather than a few days worth - of use off a single set of batteries.
